At this conference we were all hit with the obvious fact that diet and nutrition impacts how we age.. We all want to look and feel our best as we age, right? And as much as, aesthetic treatments can give us a boost, the art for longevity will always lean towards our lifestyle. Stress, sleep and of course diet and nutrition play a major role too (to name some but not all!) So, let's dive into why it's crucial to guide our patients in this area while still offering them advice on aesthetic treatments.
The Magic Connection Between Food and ageing:
1. Fueling Your Cells: Think of your body as a machine that needs the right fuel to function at its best. A diet packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals helps protect your cells from damage caused by pesky free radicals. Translation: slower ageing process and if our patients are vegan or vegetarian there needs to be a discussion around amino acids.. especially if collagen is on their list of things to rebuild!
2. Skin That Glows: You know that healthy, radiant skin we all want? Well, we can do what we can in clinic but it’s important to educate our patients on how diet plays a huge part too! Nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, amino acids and proteins that build collagen are like superheroes for your skin. They keep it elastic, reduce wrinkles, and give you that youthful glow.
3. Bye-Bye Inflammation: Chronic inflammation is like the bad guy in the ageing story. It speeds up the whole process and brings along nasty age-related diseases. We all know that munching on inflammation-fighting foods like colorful fruits, veggies, and omega-3 fatty acids, you can keep inflammation in check and rock your overall health but why do we not discuss this when we are popping our patients under the Dermalux to tackle inflammation in our skin.. we need to be talking about the elephant in the room too.
4. Strong Bones, Happy You: As we age, our bones tend to get weaker, making osteoporosis a scary possibility. A diet rich in calcium, vitamin D, and other bone-loving nutrients can slow down bone loss and keep those bones strong and let’s be fair, when we analyse the ageing face: bone density changes are up high in factors leading to a lack of structure in our faces!
5. Sharp Mind, Bright Future: Ageing doesn't have to mean a foggy brain..many patients come in complaining of memory loss, fatigue and issues with sleep which we all know will lead to a cascade of health barriers but hitting those fatty acids, b vitamins and beyond can help manage these symptoms.. and more!
All of our patients are unique, it's important to assess their individual needs, taking into account their medical history, lifestyle, and food preferences. This way, we can craft personalised advice that suits their specific needs. We're all about spreading the knowledge, right? Educating our patients about how their food choices impact aging helps them make informed decisions. Let's break it down for them, explaining the benefits of key nutrients and whole foods. Knowledge is power, my friends!
And let’s be honest there are things we can do outside of this .. one being at home supplements like NAD at home.. I talk about this now as it was discussed at the conference last weekend and everyone is going crazy over getting this in clinic to provide to their patients!
